Zohran Mamdani, a 33-year-old socialist and state assemblyman of Ugandan and Indian-origin, is leading in New York City's Democratic mayoral primary. A South African-educated Muslim, Mamdani surged with a platform of affordable housing, free daycare, and universal childcare, gaining about 43% of the vote with 95% of ballots counted.
