💨 Abstract
South African police arrested around 1,000 undocumented migrants working in illegal gold mines near Barberton. The operation, which lasted a week, was conducted in collaboration with mine security. The mines are close to the borders of Eswatini and Mozambique. Barberton Mines stated that the arrests followed community outcry over job cuts due to unprofitable mining operations, revealing the existence of a thriving illegal mining network underground. No fatalities were reported.
