💨 Abstract
Three malaria cases have been confirmed in the Free State, South Africa, with one fatality. A 53-year-old man died, and two relatives, aged 50 and 23, are hospitalized but stable. The cases are unusual as none of the affected individuals had traveled to malaria-endemic areas. Health authorities are investigating the source of the infection, possibly local transmission. The Free State Department of Health has activated a response plan, including enhanced surveillance and public health education.
