💨 Abstract

Eight endangered black-footed ferret kits were born at the Smithsonian’s National Zoo’s Virginia campus. Their mother, Aristides, gave birth to the kits on May 28. Each kit weighs about as much as a AAA battery and is currently blind. Staff will monitor their progress through a live camera feed and perform a neonatal exam in 10 days to determine their sexes. The kits will be weaned and start exploring their enclosure in about 50 days.
