On May 29, 1953, Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay became the first to summit Mount Everest. Other notable events include Rhode Island ratifying the U.S. Constitution in 1790, the sinking of the RMS Empress of Ireland in 1914, and Janet Guthrie becoming the first woman to race in the Indianapolis 500 in 1977.
