💨 Abstract
Text scams targeting U.S. adults surged by 86% in 2025, with 82% of 82% Americans receiving at least one weekly. This rise is partly due to the frequent sharing of phone numbers online. Experts advise avoiding providing phone numbers when possible. To reduce spam, users should report and block suspicious messages. The Federal Trade Commission reported $470 million in losses from text scams in 2024.
