💨 Abstract
On July 30, 2025, President Donald Trump signed an executive order imposing a 50% tariff on Brazil, citing Brazil’s policies and prosecution of former President Jair Bolsonaro as an economic threat. The move follows a legal rationale from a 1977 law despite the U.S. having a trade surplus with Brazil. The order also targets Brazil’s judiciary, specifically Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes, over alleged suppression of free speech.
