💨 Abstract
The National Guard in D.C. may now be armed, contrary to initial guidance. They are deployed to support law enforcement and deter crime, not to make arrests. The move follows President Trump's declaration of a public safety emergency in the city. Despite a drop in violent crime, protests against the increased law enforcement presence have emerged. Additionally, Republican governors from several states have agreed to send their National Guard members to assist.
