đź’¨ Abstract
The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (Metro) has fully implemented automated train service across the Blue, Orange, and Silver Lines, achieving complete automation for the first time since 2009. This system, called Automatic Train Operation (ATO), controls acceleration, deceleration, and speed, allowing operators to manage doors and announcements. The rollout, which began with the Red Line in December 2024, has led to improved safety and reliability.
