💨 Abstract

Archaeologists at William & Mary University in Virginia discovered the foundation of the nation’s oldest surviving schoolhouse for Black children, dating back to the 1700s. This building, initially the Williamsburg Bray School, taught enslaved students in the 1760s and later served as a women's dormitory. The site contains historical artifacts, including slate pencils and jewelry, offering insights into early American history.
