💨 Abstract
California has approved a $321 billion budget that reduces progressive programs to close a $12 billion deficit. The budget delays health coverage for low-income immigrants starting in 2026 and reduces mental health resources. While avoiding some severe cuts, it will still raise new costs to taxpayers. Lawmakers used savings, borrowing, and payment delays to balance the budget. They also allocated funds for firefighting and criminal justice initiatives. The spending plan is contingent on legislation to simplify housing development.
