💨 Abstract
In a significant rollback of transgender rights, Iowa has removed gender identity protections from its civil rights code, leaving transgender and nonbinary residents vulnerable to discrimination in employment, housing, and other areas. The new law, signed by Republican Gov. Kim Reynolds, also restricts changes to sex designations on birth certificates and excludes Medicaid coverage for gender-affirming surgeries and hormone therapy. Critics argue this move increases discrimination risks, while supporters defend it as necessary for maintaining biological distinctions between sexes.
