💨 Abstract
An Alabama judge has delayed the execution of David Lee Roberts, scheduled for August 21, to assess his mental competence. Roberts, diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia, hears voices and has delusions, leading his attorneys to argue that he lacks a rational understanding of his impending execution. The judge issued the stay pending a report from the Alabama Department of Mental Health. Roberts was convicted of killing Annetra Jones in 1992 and was scheduled to be executed by nitrogen gas.
