Union Pacific, Norfolk Southern discuss merger to create transcontinental railroad, AP source says -
💨 Abstract
Union Pacific and Norfolk Southern, the largest and smallest of the six major freight railroads in the U.S., are in merger talks. The combined railroad would connect the East and West Coasts, streamlining deliveries and simplifying shipping processes. However, regulatory approval is uncertain due to past issues with rail mergers and concerns from shippers about reduced options. The Surface Transportation Board, currently split between Republicans and Democrats, will need to review and approve any deal, which could take years.
