💨 Abstract
A 12-year-old boy died from a brain-eating amoeba two weeks after swimming in a South Carolina lake. The amoeba, Naegleria fowleri, is found in warm freshwater and enters the brain through the nose, causing a fatal infection called primary amebic meningoencephalitis. Only four people have survived out of 167 reported cases in the U.S. since 1962.
