💨 Abstract

On August 13, 2025, New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham declared a state of emergency in northern New Mexico due to rising violent crime and drug trafficking. The declaration allocates $750,000 to combat these issues in Rio Arriba County, including two Native American pueblos. This area, stretching from Española to the Colorado border, faces severe opioid use, high overdose death rates, and increasing homelessness, straining local law enforcement.
