💨 Abstract

A statue of Barbara Rose Johns, a teenage civil rights leader, will be unveiled at the U.S. Capitol. At 16, Johns led a student strike against poor conditions at her segregated high school in Virginia in 1951, inspiring the Brown v. Board of Education case. The statue replaces one of Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee, removed in 2020. The ceremony will feature prominent political figures and honor Johns' legacy in fighting for equal education.
