In a thrilling match, Mexico narrowly defeated Dominican Republic 3-2 in the opening game of the CONCACAF Gold Cup defense at the SoFi Stadium. Édson Álvarez, Raúl Jiménez, and César Montes scored for Mexico, while Peter González and Edison Azcona scored for Dominican Republic. The underdog Dominican team played fearlessly, even leading 2-1 at one point. Mexico will face Suriname next, while Dominican Republic will play against Costa Rica.
