💨 Abstract

Olivia Dreizen Howell was born with a congenital heart defect 40 years ago. Most patients died then, but advances in treatment mean about 85% of babies with CHD now survive to adulthood. CHD, a structural heart issue present at birth, differs from acquired heart disease, which develops later in life due to lifestyle factors. Many forms of CHD exist, from mild to complex, such as holes in the heart chambers or faulty valves.
