💨 Abstract

The article discusses the intertwined issues of illegal drug trafficking and gold mining in South America, particularly in Peru. The production of coca, the base for cocaine, has surged in Peru, driven by the high global price of gold and the convergence of illegal mining and drug trafficking. This "narco-minería" has enriched criminal groups and corrupt officials, with significant operations in Peru, Colombia, Ecuador, Brazil, and Venezuela.
