💨 Abstract

NASA's 2001 Mars Odyssey orbiter captured a unique image of the 12-mile-high volcano Arsia Mons poking through early morning clouds on Mars. This is the first time one of Mars' volcanoes has been imaged on the planet's horizon. Arsia Mons, part of the Tharsis Mountains, is the cloudiest of the three volcanoes in the area and is roughly twice as tall as Earth’s largest volcano, Hawaii’s Mauna Loa.
