💨 Abstract
In Washington state, 14 abandoned boats were airlifted by a firefighting helicopter from an uninhabited island in Puget Sound. The operation, funded by a federal grant, was necessary to protect marine ecosystems and kelp beds vital for salmon. The island, Squaxin Island, holds cultural significance for the Squaxin Island Tribe, which supports the cleanup effort to maintain accessible, clean beaches for future generations.
