💨 Abstract
Annually, the tradition of "Swan Upping" occurs on the River Thames to assess the health of mute swans, which are considered property of the British monarch, King Charles III. Participants, known as Swan Uppers, carefully measure and inspect the swans for signs of disease or injury. This census, overseen by David Barber, the King's Swan Marker, helps monitor swan populations and faces threats like avian flu.
