đź’¨ Abstract
Public school enrollment in the U.S. has not recovered to pre-pandemic levels and is projected to continue declining. By 2031, enrollment is expected to drop by nearly 4 million students, a 7.6% decrease. The most significant declines are in elementary and middle grades, particularly in the Northeast, West, and Rust Belt. Factors include falling birth rates, domestic migration, and a shift towards private, charter, or homeschooling.
