đź’¨ Abstract

Researchers at Virginia Tech and a Belgian school have developed an AI model that accurately predicts hurricane-induced flooding. Using 40 years of data, the model can forecast extreme water levels in minutes, even in data-scarce regions. As more storm data is fed into the model, its predictions improve. The goal is to alert communities hours or days in advance about potential flooding from distant storms, eventually covering the entire Chesapeake Bay region. This advance warning could help save lives and reduce damage.
