💨 Abstract
Bernadette Dugasse, 68, was forced to leave her birthplace, the Chagos Islands, as a toddler due to a military base project by the British and U.S. governments. After decades of fighting for the right to return, she and other displaced islanders were disheartened when the U.K. transferred the islands' sovereignty to Mauritius. This move further dimmed their hopes of ever returning home.
