💨 Abstract
A tense maritime confrontation occurred between Chinese and Philippine vessels in the South China Sea. The Philippine Bureau of Fisheries reported that the Chinese coast guard used a water cannon against two Philippine fishing boats conducting marine research near Sandy Cay. This incident resulted in damage to one of the Philippine ships and endangered its crew. China indicated that the Philippine vessels were acting unlawfully within areas it claims sovereignty over, while the U.S. stood in support of the Philippines, stressing adherence to international law in the region.
