💨 Abstract

Brazilian prosecutors have filed criminal charges against Ruben Dario Villar for the 2022 murders of Indigenous advocate Bruno Pereira and journalist Dom Phillips in the Amazon. The killings occurred while Phillips was researching a book on Amazon conservation. Pereira's efforts to enforce environmental laws are believed to have motivated the murders. Villar, a Colombian fish trader, allegedly financed an illegal fishing operation in the Javari Valley and has been jailed since 2022.
