💨 Abstract
On June 9, 2025, 18 more countries ratified the High Seas Treaty, bringing the total to 49, just 11 short of the 60 needed for it to enter into force. The treaty, also known as the Agreement on Biodiversity Beyond National Jurisdiction, is the first legally binding agreement aimed at protecting marine biodiversity in international waters, which constitute nearly two-thirds of the ocean.
