💨 Abstract
On June 5, 2025, clashes erupted in an Indigenous community in eastern Panama between border police and protesters demonstrating against changes to the country's social security system. Police, in riot gear, used tear gas and rubber-coated metal balls to disperse protesters firing rocks and throwing Molotov cocktails. Both sides reported injuries, and a home was burned in the encounter. The protests, ongoing for over a month, also include opposition to the new security agreement with the U.S.
