💨 Abstract

In a geopolitical move, Taiwan is enhancing ties with Guatemala, offering aid and cooperation in education, technology, and infrastructure. This initiative is a counter to China's attempts to lure away Taiwan's allies with significant infrastructure projects. Former countries have been attracted to China's big-ticket items, which often come with market-rate repayments. Taiwanese assistance is more modest, reflecting its parliamentary democracy's budget constraints, and it promotes democratic values.
