đ¨ Abstract
Under proposed plans in England and Wales, prisoners convicted of rape or child abuse may undergo chemical castration to reduce reoffending. Justice Secretary Shabana Mahmood aims to start the program in 20 prisons. The treatment, involving drugs to lower testosterone and sexual desire, could be expanded nationally. Though voluntary, initial proposals for a small pilot program were dismissed as insufficient. Officials see this as a route to protecting the public and helping willing offenders reduce their sexual urges.
