💨 Abstract
Tesco has introduced cameras on self-service checkouts that playback footage to ensure shoppers scan all items. This technology, similar to Sainsbury’s, aims to reduce shoplifting by alerting customers to missing scans. While Tesco and Sainsbury's view this as a way to enhance the checkout process, customers have expressed concerns about increased surveillance. Shoplifting offences have risen by 20% in England and Wales, influenced by the cost of living.
