💨 Abstract
Researchers at Newcastle University, UK have developed a novel method to scan lungs in real-time, enabling doctors to observe the functioning of transplanted lungs and detect any deterioration earlier. The method uses a special gas, perfluoro propane, which can be seen on an MRI scanner and safely breathed in and out by patients. The scans reveal patchy ventilation in patients with lung disease and show which parts of the lung improve with treatment.
