Justice Bhushan Ramkrishna Gavai, India's 52nd and first Buddhist Chief Justice, began a six-month tenure on May 14, 2025. Justice Gavai, from a village in Maharashtra and the second Dalit to lead the judiciary, has authored around 300 verdicts, including landmark rulings on constitutional issues, liberties, and "bulldozer justice."
