Madhav Gadgil, inspired by Salim Ali at age 14, became India's leading ecologist. He founded the Centre for Ecological Sciences at IISc and authored the 'Gadgil Report' advocating for the protection of the Western Ghats. Gadgil, who passed away at 83, was known for his field research, policy influence, and advocacy for local communities. His legacy includes over 200 scientific papers and significant contributions to ecological conservation.
