💨 Abstract
Mexico will restrict cattle movement from its south to curb the spread of screwworm, a deadly pest for livestock recently detected there. The U.S. has suspended Mexican cattle imports due to this threat. Agriculture Minister Julio Berdegue ignored the proposal to close Mexico’s southern border to cattle from Central America. He said eradicating the screwworm will take a long time but emphasized maintaining the national meat supply. The U.S. and Mexico agreed last month on handling this pest.
