Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called for the withdrawal of UN peacekeeping forces from southern Lebanon, citing the danger to both UNIFIL soldiers and Israeli troops. He accused Hezbollah of turning UNIFIL soldiers into hostages and argued that their continued presence in Hezbollah strongholds and combat zones endangers both the UNIFIL soldiers and Israeli soldiers.
