💨 Abstract
South African ports rank poorly in the 2024 Container Port Performance Index, with Durban last (403) and Coega second-last (402) due to aging equipment and long wait times. The Red Sea crisis strained operations, but the government and Transnet are investing in upgrades, including new cranes, tugboats, and operational reforms. Despite improvements, Cape Town (400) and Port Elizabeth (395) also performed poorly.
