💨 Abstract
Johannesburg's waterways are threatened by an invasive plant species called red fern, which is rapidly spreading and classified as a Category 1b weed under the NEMBA Act. This follows a costly cleanup of Kariba weed, another invasive plant. Red fern poses risks to ecosystems, water quality, and infrastructure. Authorities are exploring a rim flow device to combat the infestation, but approval is pending.
