On Day 1 of the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, South Africa’s Gift Leotlela impressed with a personal best and fastest qualifying time (9.87s) in the men’s 100m heats. Akani Simbine also advanced to the semis, while the mixed 4x400m relay set an African record (3:11.16) and finished sixth in the final.
