💨 Abstract
South Africa faces a surge in deepfake fraud, leading the region with 22% of cases. Fraudsters use AI to manipulate images, videos, and biometric systems, primarily targeting facial recognition checks. Nearly 90% of rejected verification attempts involve impersonation and spoofing. Deepfakes, which create realistic but fake media, are particularly concerning as they can deceive automated security systems.
