💨 Abstract

An 8.8-magnitude earthquake struck off the eastern coast of Russia, triggering tsunamis in the northern Pacific and prompting warnings from Hawaii to New Zealand. The quake was the strongest since the 2011 event that caused the Fukushima nuclear meltdown. Tsunami waves were detected in Japan and advisories were issued across the U.S. West Coast and Pacific nations. No major casualties were reported, but residents near the epicenter were evacuated.
