💨 Abstract
Matthew Lee Johnson was executed by lethal injection 13 years after he fatally burned Nancy Harris, a 76-year-old store clerk, during a robbery in Dallas. Before his death, Johnson begged Harris' family for forgiveness, but also made disturbing statements. He admitted to being high on crack at the time of the murder. Johnson's execution came amidst controversy over South Carolina's recent executions and a new law restricting information about them. The ACLU sued the state over the secrecy law.
