💨 Abstract

A mother and her two children in Southern California had a near-miss with a lightning strike. While recording a storm, a massive lightning bolt hit a tree just behind her six-year-old daughter, Penelope. The children screamed and ran inside. The strike damaged two trees and shook the neighbor's house, with the rain extinguishing the resulting fires. Thunderstorms are unusual in the area, occurring fewer than 10 days a year.
