💨 Abstract

A seven-year study in Kruger National Park, South Africa, found that dehorning rhinos reduced poaching by 78% across eight reserves. This drastic measure, though debated, saves hundreds of rhinos. By removing horns, the study shows the effective removal of what poachers target. However, other efforts like stronger law enforcement are also crucial. Concerns about the wellbeing of rhinos and the long-term impacts of dehorning persist.
