💨 Abstract

A flesh-eating parasite called the New World screwworm fly has spread rapidly in Mexico, leading to a ban on cattle imports to the U.S. The outbreak has caught many ranchers off guard despite past incidents. Mexico is building a facility to produce sterile flies, an effective control method, but it won't be ready until next year. Veterinarian Alfredo Chávez and rancher Edi Valencia Santos report having treated numerous infected animals and are facing high medicine costs and limited government support.
