💨 Abstract
Consumers' Checkbook published a list of 65 items that are often not worth purchasing, many of which are unnecessary products, services, and policies pushed by companies. Examples include home warranties, trip protection plans, and extended warranties. Companies exploit consumer loss aversion, or the fear of potential losses, to market these policies. While basic insurances are necessary, smaller "peace of mind" policies often have exclusions that make them less valuable.
