💨 Abstract

A 64-year-old man is missing after a massive glacier landslide destroyed 90% of an evacuated Alpine village in Switzerland. The landslide, caused by a chunk of the Birch Glacier breaking off, buried homes and the Lonza River bed. Search and rescue operations are underway. The event highlights concerns over accelerating glacier retreat due to global warming, with Switzerland experiencing significant glacier volume loss in recent years.
