💨 Abstract

A veteran, Matthew Fast, died at 29 after his heart condition, caused by exposure to burn pits during military service, went unnoticed. Doctors had not asked about his military background. His widow, Jessica, advocates for a mandatory military service inquiry at healthcare facilities. The "SFC Matthew Fast Act," now Maryland law, requires this inquiry, aiming to prevent similar tragedies. The law is the first of its kind in the U.S.
